Sharing FAQ
Answers to common questions about sharing items and collections in Ente Locker.
Sharing with Users
How do I share items with family?
- Create a collection for the items you want to share (or use an existing one)
- Add all relevant items to the collection
- Open the collection and tap the share button
- Select Share with Ente user
- Enter your family member's Ente email address
- Choose permissions (Viewer or Collaborator)
- Tap Share
Your family member will receive the shared collection in their Locker app.
Can I share with non-Ente users?
Yes, using public links for individual items. Create a public link that can be opened in any web browser:
- Open the item
- Tap the share button
- Select Create public link
- Copy and share the link
Note: Collections cannot be shared via public links—only with other Ente users.

What happens when I update a shared item?
When you update an item shared with Ente users:
- Recipients see the updated content next time they view the item
- They see the updated content next time they open it
- No notification is sent for updates
For public links, viewers see the current version when they access the link.
What happens if I revoke access to shared content?
When you remove someone's access:
- They immediately lose the ability to view the content
- The content disappears from their Locker
- Any public links are unaffected (must be revoked separately)
Can I share individual items with Ente users?
Not directly. To share an individual item with another Ente user:
- Add the item to a collection
- Share the collection with them
Alternatively, create a public link for the item that anyone can access in a browser.
Can viewers add items to shared content?
No. Viewers can only view content. To allow adding items, share with Collaborator permissions instead.
Can I see who has access to my shared content?
Yes. Open the shared item or collection, tap the share button, and view the list of people with access.
What happens if I delete a shared collection?
When you delete a collection you've shared with others:
- If you're the owner: The collection is removed from all shared users' accounts. They lose access to the items.
- If you're a viewer/collaborator: You remove yourself from the shared collection. Other users and the owner retain access.
Items in a deleted shared collection follow the same rules as regular collections—you can choose to keep or delete the items when deleting the collection.
What happens to shared items if the owner deletes their account?
If an account owner deletes their Ente account, all their shared collections become inaccessible to shared users. Collaborators and viewers lose access to all content shared by that user.
If you need continued access to shared content, consider:
- Asking the owner to transfer ownership before account deletion
- Creating your own copies of important shared items
Public Links
Are public links end-to-end encrypted?
Yes and no. The content remains encrypted on Ente's servers. However, the decryption key is embedded in the URL, so anyone with the link can decrypt and view the content.
For sensitive information, use password protection on public links.
Can I see who viewed my public link?
No. Ente does not track who views public links to maintain privacy. We can tell you how many devices have accessed a link, but not who.
What happens if I share a sensitive password via public link?
Anyone with the link can view the password. For sensitive content:
- Add a password to the link
- Set an expiration date
- Share the link password through a separate channel
- Revoke the link after use
Can I set a public link to expire?
Yes. When creating or editing a public link:
- Tap Set expiration
- Choose when the link should expire
- After expiration, the link stops working
How do I revoke a public link?
- Open the shared item or collection
- Tap the share button
- Find the public link you want to revoke
- Tap it and select Delete link
The link immediately stops working.
Security
How does sharing work with encryption?
When sharing with Ente users:
- Your device encrypts the sharing key with the recipient's public key
- Only their device can decrypt this key
- Ente's servers never have access to the decrypted content
For public links:
- The decryption key is added to the URL fragment
- The fragment is never sent to servers
- Anyone with the full URL can decrypt the content
Is it safe to share passwords via Locker?
When sharing with Ente users, yes. The end-to-end encryption protects the content.
When using public links, be cautious:
- Add a password to the link
- Set an expiration date
- Share the link through secure channels
- Revoke after use
